From Youth Refuge to NSW Apprentice of the Year: NECA Training Helps Spark a Brighter Future

From Youth Refuge to NSW Apprentice of the Year

When the Daily Telegraph profiled Kathryn Beale’s rise from hardship to celebrated electrician, it highlighted not only her grit but the life-changing power of quality training. Ten years ago, Kathryn was a 16-year-old living in a youth refuge after family breakdown. Today she is the NSW Apprentice of the Year—and a proud NECA Training graduate.

A Difficult Start

Kathryn had been a high-achieving “straight-A student,” dreaming of veterinary medicine, when her home life collapsed. Studying for her HSC while facing homelessness seemed impossible.

“If you don’t have a place to stay and an income, you’ve got to find those things first,” she told the Daily Telegraph.

Determined not to let circumstance define her future, Kathryn explored different careers, even considering military service. But it was an electrical apprenticeship that lit the way forward.

Finding Her Spark with NECA Training

Kathryn enrolled in the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician through NECA Training. Here she found structure, mentorship, and a clear career path. Our trainers—experienced electricians themselves—understood the challenges apprentices face and provided the practical skills and guidance Kathryn needed to succeed.

“I didn’t have to pay for any HECS debt, and it guarantees work going forward,” Kathryn explained.

Her outstanding performance saw her recognised at the NSW Training Awards, where she was named Apprentice of the Year, a milestone she describes as “surreal.”

NECA Training’s Ongoing Support

Kathryn’s success reflects NECA Training’s commitment to supporting students beyond the classroom:

  • Apprentice mentoring and wellbeing resources
  • Employer connections for real-world job placements

These services ensure apprentices—whether starting straight from school or changing careers—can focus on mastering their trade.

A Bright Future in a Growing Industry

With a national shortage of qualified electricians (see skills report), graduates like Kathryn are entering an industry full of opportunity: renewable energy, smart homes, and infrastructure projects all need skilled sparkies.

Kathryn’s Advice to Future Apprentices

“My advice now is get a trade—even if you ultimately decide to do something else. There’s such a massive skills shortage and a trade guarantees work,” she says.

Her words resonate with anyone considering a career change or seeking stability: an apprenticeship is a debt-free, practical path to a respected profession.
