Isolate, Lock Out, Tag Out (LOTO) is implemented as a safety procedure to ensure the proper deactivation of dangerous equipment and prevent any inadvertent start-up during maintenance or repair tasks. This process mandates the isolation and deactivation of hazardous energy sources before commencing work on the respective plant or equipment.

After isolating the power sources, they are securely locked, and a tag is attached to the lock, indicating the identity of the worker and the reason for implementing LOTO. The worker is entrusted with the key to the lock, ensuring that they are the only person authorized to remove the lock and initiate equipment operation. By doing so, this precautionary measure effectively prevents any accidental activation of the equipment while it poses a hazard or while a worker is in direct contact with it.

This course is an industry based course and is not aligned to a Unit of Competency, by completing it you are meeting your obligations to your employer to recognise the correct procedure to isolate and make safe, energy systems prior to work.
